Beatles sheet music covers

Hello everyone. There are quite a few images of sheet music covers and sleeves for Beatles songs composed solely of elements in the public domain, that is, uncopyrighted images, text, basic shapes, and in some cases logos. en:File:Polythene Pam sheet music.PNG, en:File:Piggies sheet music cover.jpg, en:File:Yer Blues sheet music cover.jpg, en:File:Her majesty.jpg are such examples. Recently, the sleeve for "I Want to Hold Your Hand" has been moved to the Commons exactly because it is constituted of a PD image, a PD logo, and basic text and shapes (it has been nominated for deletion but seems sure to stay). Should other such sheet music covers and sleeves be moved to the Commons? DannyRogers800 (talk) 05:10, 11 August 2026 (UTC)

Unverifiable information from missing and dead links

I am much more used to using and editing Wikipedia than Commons. Information about media on Wikipedia often comes directly from Commons. An issue that can arise is that the source of that information is either missing or a dead link, meaning that that information on Wikipedia cannot be verified. What should be done if information that is unverifiable for these reasons is encountered on Commons or Wikipedia with Commons as the source? Donn Fretz (talk) 15:29, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

@Donn Fretz: Can you please be more specific (e.g. a specific example or examples)? and are you asking what should be done on Commons or on Wikipedia [in some unspecified language; their policies differ]? Sorry to keep you waiting. The important question is what should you if you find media with unverifiable information about it (like this) on Commons? Should you ignore it, change it or look for somewhere else with information about it?

The other question, which is less important and you do need to answer, is is it advisable to use information from Commons on Wikipedia without verifying it with another source? Donn Fretz (talk) 15:18, 16 August 2026 (UTC)

@Donn Fretz: Commons is much looser about sourcing than Wikipedia. It is more like pre-Seigenthaler English-language Wikipedia. Also, as you know, when writing English-language Wikipedia articles, even other English-language Wikipedia articles are not considered reliable sources. Further, online sourcing anywhere, including in English-language Wikipedia articles, can suffer from link rot.

Like in the pre-Seigenthaler English-language Wikipedia, you are thrown somewhat back on the talk and history pages and your own knowledge (and/or investigation) of the reputation of the person who authored the statement in question, or of the underlying claim. And, of course, that reputational side can be tricky, because many people work broadly and are expert in some of the areas where they work, but not in others.

As for what you should do: the example you cite certainly doesn't meet the English-language Wikipedia standard for sourcing. It is probably acceptable by Commons' standards - Jmabel ! talk 00:54, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

You will have to remove the frame.

Upload the image, use COM:CropTool, then apply {{Non-free frame revdel}}.

@Andrei1992Max: Are you talking about en:File:More Pricks Than Kicks.jpg or something else? If that is the file you mean, it will be copyrighted in the U.S. until 1 January 2030, so Commons cannot possibly host it before that. I am not sure of its UK copyright status, so it might be longer. @Andrei1992Max If you use this pic on the Russian Wikipedia, you'll have to upload it locally on ru-WP, not Commons, so you have to ask there what the "rules" are. Could I upload my photo of a building?

@TheAdventuresOfCecil: Depends on which country the building is in and how old the building is / whether the building is under copyright. In a good number of countries (e.g. US, Canada, UK, Australia, India, Brazil, Japan...), there is freedom of panorama for buildings, meaning that you are generally free to use your photos of buildings as you wish. In other countries (e.g. France, Italy, Egypt, UAE...), there is no freedom of panorama for buildings, meaning that photos of copyrighted buildings are subject to copyright restrictions. Photos of buildings can still be uploaded if they are old enough to have fallen into the public domain.

Upload fails

I no longer seem to be able to upload anything, either via the Upload Wizard or via the 'Upload a new version' command. I use Private Relay for privacy, so have to manually unhide my IP address to edit here. That worked fine until recently, but no longer seems to – in the upload wizard I get a message that says "The server responded with an invalid JSON document. This could be a problem with the API, or you could be using a proxy server that prevents you from uploading files"; in the 'Upload a new version' dialogue I just get shunted back to a blank upload page. @Justlettersandnumbers: yes, but this isn't a basic "how do I do such-and-such", it's apparently an issue with hoe the relay is being handled, and it would be sheer coincidence for someone with a clue about that to come to this page. Similarly, someone who comes here with a complicated copyright question is likely to be sent to COM:VP/C. I don't think it would be useful for the Upload Wizard to try to list the perhaps half-dozen different places that might best handle different questions and make the user work out which one applies best. Upload Wizard sends them to a single place that can handle most questions, and can tell them where to go for those we can't handle. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

MS Azul 1725

On page 400 of the following article is a photo of "MS Azul 1725" (a papyrus) which would be quite useful for my article on the Charta Borgiana - https://austriaca.at/0xc1aa5572%200x001499e1. I do not know a) whether it is legal to extract the photo of the papyrus (I would guess so, because the papyrus itself is nearly 2,000 years old, and b) do not know the best technical way to extract the photo, if legal. Your question apparently signals that you're using a cloud storage (Google Photos, perhaps?). Save the file(s) you want to upload on Commons on your local HDD/SDD and upload from there. Can we import logos ?

A logo that is currently in use is liable to be protected by trademark law. It is okay to upload a trademarked image here. The problem is if we upload a work that is protected by copyright law in such a way that it isn't licensed to be uploaded here. The distinction can be subtle, but basically, we accept files that have a clear educational purpose (broadly construed) and that has an appropriate license or is in the public domain. We have a lot of trademarked logos here, such as File:UNESCO flag.png. So in principle, yes you can upload a logo. To know if a specific logo is acceptable here, we would need more information. @Mardoooo: The main issue for logos is usually whether it is above or below the threshold of originality for copyright, which is different in different countries. Alan Freed

The information concerning Alan Freed leaves out some very important information. I worked for Alan in the late fifties and I'm the only one that is still alive that was there at the company office (Alan Freed Productions) when everything happened. From the many rock concerts to the troubles and beyond to the present day. I'm the President of Alan Freed Productions and took over the company after 1965 with my partners Clay Cole and Ray Raneri. Both passed away long ago. I still do rock concerts as Alan Freed Productions and have a Federal Trademark #74-698395 with the company name for many years. I need to add valuable and missing information to my previous boss Alan Freeds bio on Wikipedia. I'm the last rock promoter from that era. How do I add this information before I too am gone? @Wollenhaupt-Schmidt: Urheberrechte sind vererbbar, so dass Erben genauso Lizenzen erteilen können wir Werkschaffende zu Lebzeiten. Es ist nicht ungewöhnlich und eine sehr begrüßenswerte Absicht, dass Erben nachgelassenen Werke Commons-tauglich lizenzieren wollen, dafür sind zum Beispiel auch Lizenzvorlagen wie {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} vorhanden.

Allerdings sagt de:Nachlassverwaltung für mich nicht klar aus, dass eine Nachlassverwalterin dieselben Rechte hat wie ein Erbe. Falls darüber eine Bestätigung oder eine Einwilligung von allen vorhandenen Erben zur Lizenzierung vorgelegt werden kann, müssten solche Nachweise an das zu Vertraulichkeit und Datenschutz verpflichtete Supportteam gesandt werden, um das Material hier rechtmäßig vorhalten zu können. Bei Fotos, die in Innenräumen oder auf Privatgelände aufgenommen worden sind, muss der Hausherr ebenfalls seine Zustimmung geben; bei nicht selbst gemachten Fotos muss außerdem der Fotograf seine Zustimmung geben. GeorgDerReisende (talk) 13:47, 17 August 2026 (UTC)

Die Aussage zu Privaträumen oder -gelände ist in dieser Absolutheit falsch. Es gibt in Deutschland prinzipiell kein de:Recht am Bild der eigenen Sache und eine de:Verletzung des höchstpersönlichen Lebensbereichs und von Persönlichkeitsrechten durch Bildaufnahmen ist bei Fotos von Kunstwerken, die innerhalb des Projekt-Rahmens liegen, nicht einschlägig. Ich hatte allerdings tatsächlich vergessen darauf hinzuweisen, dass von Dritten angefertigte Fotos anders als eigene zu behandeln sind (vgl. COM:THIRD). Für eine Alleinerbin ist die Angelegenheit eher einfach:

1. Hochladen der Bilder, an welchen alle Rechte gehalten werden (das schließt einerseits die ererbten Rechte an den Kunstwerken ein, aber auch die fotografischen Rechte an den Bildern, die die Kunstwerke abbilden [bitte nur eigene Aufnahmen!])
2. Als Lizenz empfehlen sich entweder {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} oder {{Cc-by-sa-3.0-heirs}}
3. Nach dem Upload eine Nachricht an das Supportteam mailen, welche die URL der hochgeladenen Bilder aufführt und einen Nachweis der Eigenschaft "Erbin" beinhaltet. Wie dieser aussehen kann, müssten die VRT-Kollegen sagen können.

(Mit einige Hilfe von Google Translate) Bei einer großen Anzahl von Bildern kann die Angabe „der URLs der hochgeladenen Bilder“ umständlich sein. Issue stemming from a bungled upload

Hello. Recently I've been uploading pictures from an 1843/1891 book (two volumes), Christian iconography; or, The history of Christian art in the middle ages. I did some fairly haphazard uploading at first, since I was focusing on images that I found visually interesting, then decided to go through and just upload them all. I had decided to upload them with a [book title] [volume number] [illustration number] naming system, so the new ones slotted in order with the older ones.

Issue is I was doing this the other day and I made a typo in one image: File:Christian iconography - or, The history of Christian art in the Middle Ages Vol. 2 Fig. 135.png (here) was accidentally uploaded as File:Christian iconography - or, The history of Christian art in the Middle Ages Vol. 2 Fig. 136.png ; I moved the file, but the original name is still taken up by a redirect, which means that I can't upload the actual Fig. 136 to it (they're both PNG files).

My question is the following: would it be acceptable or possible to request the original link name to be cut and then, once it is, to upload the original image to the now-unoccupied name? I apologize if this seems like a trivial question, I'm just a little hesitant to pile up a bunch of maintenance requests created due to my own blundering typing. 1. you go to the voting page, like Commons:Photo challenge/2026 - July - Disaster rephotography/Voting
2. you look through the entries and decide on your choice of the first , second and third place.
3. you go to your choice for the first place and click "[ edit section ]" next to the file name
4. paste "*{{3/3*}} -- ~~~~" in the designated section and press "save"
5. continue the process with second and third places using "*{{2/3*}} -- ~~~~" and "*{{1/3*}} -- ~~~~"
6. if there are entries you thought were very good but did not make the cut you can award them ""*{{0/3*}} -- ~~~~" to let them know

I have a question about the scope of COM:AIIP

Suppose there is a notable satirical visual concept involving an identifiable real person, but the existing images illustrating that concept cannot be used on Commons due to copyright restrictions.

If a new image is created solely from public-domain materials, without reproducing any particular existing image, in order to illustrate that notable concept:

1. If it is created using generative AI, should it be considered prohibited under COM:AIIP because the newly created image itself has not received coverage in reliable sources?
2. If the same concept is instead recreated manually without generative AI, would COM:AIIP not apply, leaving the image to be evaluated under general standards such as COM:SCOPE and dignity concerns?
3. Does the fact that the depicted person is no longer living, or that they are a notable public figure, have any bearing on how such a case should be evaluated?

A specific example I have in mind is "Noala", a Korean political/internet meme combining former South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun with a koala. It has a derogatory and dehumanizing character, but the concept itself is a notable political and internet-cultural phenomenon.

In my view, both "Noala" and "MC Moohyun"(MC무현) are sufficiently notable cultural concepts to warrant their own Wikidata items, regardless of whether one approves or disapproves of the satire itself. Consequently, if freely usable media relating to these concepts can exist without copyright problems, there may also be a legitimate reason to create corresponding Commons categories. This is why I am interested in how COM:AIIP applies to freely created illustrations of such concepts. I have not uploaded such an image. 1. Yes, COM:AIIP prohibits such cases.
2. Yes, COM:AIIP doesn't apply to non-AI images. In this case, the image would be subject to COM:SCOPE and COM:DIGNITY evaluation.
3. For AI images, it doesn't matter, because what matters is the 2 criteria mentioned in COM:AIIP.

For non-AI images, I would say sort of. As mentioned in COM:DIGNITY, it is a balancing issue between the moral issues (COM:DIGNITY) and educational value (COM:SCOPE). The person being alive, or the more recent a person is alive, means it is more likely there are moral issues. However, if the person is more notable or has more public interest, it means the image is likely to have more educational value.

I have a different take from Tvpuppy, though the required threshold of notability to override the dignity issue would be higher than "sufficiently notable… to warrant their own Wikidata items." It would probably require more like Wikipedia-level notability: actual coverage of the phenomenon by the press, etc.

Assuming that threshold is met: by the nature of what you are describing, what is the basis of your remark that "the existing images illustrating that concept cannot be used on Commons due to copyright restrictions"? I would guess that most (or all) of these images have been generated with AI; if they are, someone else's AI-generated image is no more subject to copyright than one that you might create on demand, so I don't really see where the copyright issue you mention enters the picture. Wrong certification logo

I noticed that the certification logo currently used on the French Hébergement de Données de Santé page is not the official HDS certification logo, but rather a logo created by an HDS-certified cloud provider.

• Usually in this situation, at least as far as Commons is concerned, one logo is not a replacement for the other, and the editing of the fr-wiki article isn't Commons' concern.
• I doubt that File:HDS Logo.webp is Niels Krawczyk's own work, which means its current license is nonsense. Under French law, a work is copyrightable when it bears the "imprint of the personality of the author". I think that probably places this below COM:TOO so it can be kept, but it should be redescribed correctly for what it is.
• You don't link the other logo, so I have no guess as to whether it is below the TOO or not. If it is, then it could be uploaded to Commons under a different filename, and then used in fr-wiki like any other Commons file. If it is not, then you could upload it directly to fr-wiki under the policy described at fr:Wikipédia:Exceptions au droit d'auteur, and then us it in fr-wiki.

Hello @Jingjinjij. As you have mentioned, the minimum character limit for captions is 5 characters. So, “叉烧饭” (3 characters) and “拉肠” (2 characters) are not accepted.

This is a known problem for Chinese/Japanese/Korean captions, as these languages often required less characters for the same object (see phab:T220474 for related discussion).

I believe disabling search history would be entirely browser-side, and might or might not be possible depending on your browser.

It must be possible to create custom CSS that would disable mouse hover actions. If you had an account, it would have a Custom.js file; I can't think how you would customize CSS if not logged in. In 1964, RCA awarded the David Sarnoff Outstanding Achievement Award in Science to a team of scientists and released for Public Distribution a picture of the team receiving the award. The photo shows J. torkel Wallmark receiving the award presonally from General David Sarnoff. The photo was released for general news publication. Can I add this photo ro the Wikipedia entry for Wallmark (RCA no longer exists)

How many pixels in a cm?

You'll need another value, Freiherr, it's the en:pixel density. It's often stated in DPI (Dots Per Inch). With a DPI value, and knowing that one inch equals 2,54cm, you can do the math.

Pixel numbers by themselves don't describe a physical size, as any number of pixel can be distributed on an arbitrarily chosen length. Commons DPI values are 300 dpi for standard prints and 72 dpi for PC screen displays. If your 1500px image is printed at 300 dpi, that amount of pixel would make for a length of 5 inches (12,7cm) (the other side: 1000 px / 300 dpi * 2,54 = 8,47cm). I want the English Wikipedia article Papua New Guinea Defence Force [5] to be linked to Commons category Category:Papua New Guinea Defence Force and not Category:Military of Papua New Guinea. But I don't know how to do this. Category:Papua New Guinea Defence Force says "NO WIKIDATA ID FOUND!". Category:Military of Papua New Guinea in the infobox says it is linked to Wikidata item Q4743186. Mass renaming

Hello, com! Can you please suggest how to mass rename ~150 similarly named files or at least how to mass-mark it for later renaming manually by others? Case is I succeed marking about 10 of it, but can't do any further as abuse filter tells me NO for more. So... what an options I have? I'll rename these, because the copyright statement in the file name strikes me as excessive and potentially misleading (people often mistake "copyrighted" for meaning that all rights are reserved), but for the record, I'm not at all sure it does violate COM:ADVERT; I've seen a good number of files here that credit a photographer in the title. @Jmabel I can provide you a great example where it really was: huge amount of articles was renamed with the same reason with even the same "author". So you can be sure it is. 1. One admin's opinion does not create a precedent. I stand by my differing opinion. The moves I am making (batch job already running) keep the photographer's name, but remove the email address.
2. The tool I am using for the mass move does not have the option of deleting redirects, and besides, the batch is already running. If, in the future, you want to request something where you have requirements for how it is to be done state your requirements before you ask someone to do it, not after they are already taking action on your behalf. I would have simply walked away from it for lack of a tool to do what you are asking for.
3. I believe the redirects are harmless. Presumably no one will find a file redirect unless the go actively looking for it. - Jmabel ! talk 00:04, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

Blurry image

I don't see any differences, but you can manually set the width you use at the article to "unblur" it.

Question about copyright

Hello again. I have seen on Internet some images published in 1987 in a Spanish magazine (¡Hola!) that I would like to upload to Wikimedia, but I have very serious doubts about whether they are free of copyright, even though they were published more than 25 years ago—which is the legal time limit in Spain for simple photographs as stated in this template. Before uploading those images, I would like to know whether or not they meet the requirements. To that end, could someone please tell me if a photo published in Spain in 1987 on this magazine complies with Wikimedia's requirements? I am not entirely sure about it myself. Bienvenido. I think the best guidance most of us could give is what is outlined at Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Spain. As for the scope of the photographs, Commons accepts media that have an educational value or purpose and that is generally applied very broadly, so as long as the photos are intelligible, they would almost certainly count (again, assuming they are licensed correctly). ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:43, 24 August 2026 (UTC)

Even though they are free of copyright in Argentina, they wouldn't be in the United States, since the users who uploaded them to Wikimedia didn't document their publication in the United States, despite using the US template.
